BAPTISM PREPARATION PROGRAM:
The Church takes great care and concern in the preparation of parents for the Sacrament of Baptism. By providing Baptism preparation classes the parents will gain the understanding of what the expectations of the Church are with regards to the Sacrament. Please contact the Faith Formation Office and contact Deacon Bob Fishman regarding this program.
SELECTION OF A DATE AND TIME:
Following the prescribed Baptism preparation, the parents come to the Parish Office in the Cathedral Center with the child’s birth certificate and fill out a Baptismal Register Data Form. Then a date is selected for the Rite of Baptism keeping in mind that there may be other children baptized together with your child. The usual times for the Rite of Baptism are: during the 9 o’clock Sunday Mass, and following the 5 o’clock and 11 o’clock Sunday Mass. If the Rite of Baptism will take place during Mass, please note on the form how many seats should be reserved for family members and friends.
BAPTISM DURING MASS:
Please arrive fifteen minutes prior to the liturgy to find your seats and then stop by the Sacristy to let the Priest and staff member know that you are here. You will be invited to bring forward the gifts of bread and wine at the offertory and given a brief description of the Rite with regards to your participation.
Following the homily, the Celebrant invites the Baptism family and the Godparents to the steps of the sanctuary for the introductory rites. The parent and godparents are invited to make heartfelt responses to a series of questions asked by the Celebrant. Following the intercessions the Cross-bearer leads the family to the Baptismal Font. Once the Family has gathered around the font the child is anointed with the Oil of Catechumens, [the water in the font is blessed] and all present renew their Baptismal Promises. Then the parents hold the child over the basin as the Priest pours water over the child. The child is clothed with the white garment and the godparents are presented with the lighted candle. Then the Cross-bearer leads the family in procession back to the sanctuary for the conclusion of the rite. The Priest introduces the newly baptized and the people show their approval by way of applause. Then the member of the family return to their seats, or if they are bringing forward the gifts of bread and wine, they proceed to the Offertory Table in the West Vestibule.
Following Mass, there is an opportunity to take a few pictures on the steps of the sanctuary.
BAPTISM OUTSIDE MASS:
When the Sacrament of Baptism follows Mass, the family gathers around the font at the appointed time. The parents, holding the child, stand near the Priest/Deacon with the Godparents standing behind them. A short passage from Sacred Scripture may be proclaimed, then the Intercessions and Litany are prayed. The Prayer of Exorcism and Anointing are followed by [the Blessing and Invocation of God over the Baptismal Water], the Renunciation of Sin and Profession of Faith. Then the parents hold the child over the basin as the Priest/Deacon pours water over the child. The child is clothed with the white garment and the godparents are presented with the lighted candle. The Priest/Deacon prays a prayer over the Ears and Mouth, the Lord’s Prayer is said and the blessing and dismissal are given. The family is welcome to take pictures following the celebration of the Rite.
